Indian Currency (Bank Notes) After the Independence of India , the Reserve Bank of India issued denominations (including the ₹5,000 and ₹10,000 notes introduced in 1949). All banknotes were officially demonetised, which were issued in pre-independence with effect from April 28 1957. Reserve Bank of India introduced ₹20 & ₹50 notes during the 1970s and demonetised denominations higher than ₹100 in 1978. In 1987. Indian Govt. introduced the ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes are introduced in the year 2000, and ₹1 and ₹2 rupee notes were discontinued in 1995. Design of banknotes approved by the central GoI, on the recommendation of the central board of the RBI. At that time Currency notes were printed at the Currency Note Press (CNP) in Nashik, the Bank Note Press (BNP) in Dewas, the Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran (P) Ltd at Salboni and Mysore and the Watermark Paper Manufacturing Mill in Hoshangabad.
